Twelve Zodiac Signs

The Vietnamese Zodiac consists of a 12 year cycle, each year of which is named after a different animal that imparts distinct characteristics to its year. Many Vietnamese believe that the year of a person’s birth is the primary factor in determining that person’s personality traits, physical and mental attributes and degree of success and happiness throughout his/her lifetime.

The Vietnamese Lunar New Year begins with the second new moon after the winter solstice, which occurs between Jan 21 and Feb 19.

The origin of the 12 animal signs of Vietnamese astrology is unclear. Nevertheless, legends accredit Buddha (c.563-c.483 BC) with the creation of the 12-animal cycle. Apparently, he invited all the animals to visit him but, for some reason , only 12 animals showed up. To thank them, Budda gave each animal a year which would be dedicated to that animal alone throughout history. The years were allocated in the order in which the animals had arrived.
